2006 Twin City Championship, Round 6 - The Streak Ends

Man, do I suck against the Stonewall. I blew it today and the streak has ended. I share the championship with the person that beat me today. My rating will now be 1646 by my calculations. I simply MUST find the right way to meet this system.

Sorry about your loss. I don't think you need 4.... cxd4, but more importantly 7...a5? left a big whole on b5. When you play your bishop out to f5, you will weaken your light squares and playing a5 made it even worse. I would have played 4... Nc6 5. Nf3 Bg4.

If you were worried about b4, and him trying to put a knight on c5, it's a slow plan. Just get to play b5 and put your knight on c4.

If you move your bishop out to f5 or g4, also be wary of the scenarios where a knight is on c3 and he can play Qb3 attacking d5 & b7.

Also don't play B/Nxe5 in that stonewall setup. His open f-file and strong pawn on e5 will be dangerous. (I lost once doing something similar).

Overall good job. 1646 is a respectable rating. It'll feel good to hit that 1700 mark as well.

Excellent advice, Christopher. I looked back at my game against him last year, and it looks like I did much better against him then. Your system looks like a solid way to meet it.

A friend of his clued me in (after the round, obviously) to another way to meet this attack: 1. d4 Nf6 2. e3 d5 3. f4 Bf5 (immediately) and then following eith 4. ... e6, 5. ... c5, and 6. ... Nc6. Now, he can still have some tricks up his sleeves with Be2 and the Q on d1 supporting a g4 advance, so I need to think through the proper way to play against that.

As Pal Benko said in "Winning With Chess Psychology", (a quote which I remember from 10-15 years ago), if his line was so good, it would be the main line.

You can play f6 at some point to kick out his knight, but he would never be able to kick a knight off of e4 with a pawn.

You were in trouble by move 11, when your bishop was retreated back and was blocked in by e6.

I play black tonight against a Class A that likes to play the English. I try to cut down on my studying by playing 1. c4 c6, where many people play d4 transposing into my Slav. I've been working on the a6 Slav which is now popular amongst GMs. That's 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 a6 (as opposed to dxc4 in the slav proper). I used to play 1. d4 Nf6 but just d5 has been much easier to learn & play.

Sorry to hear that you lost -- 'twas like hearing that my NCAA team lost.

Chesswise, I have nothing to add to Chris's excellent comments.

Good tourn. though!

Thanks, Patrick. I've been really pouring over, since the loss, some strategies for Black, and I think I now have a handle on how to meet it. So, hopefully, I'm more prepared for future encounters with that system.

Great job on the tournament, a 75 point plus jump is a good thing.
