CTS Rankings 7/5/05

Here are the current rankings of the MDLM'ers (and friends) on the Chess Tactics Server. I thought it would be nice to give visibility to this as a way of incentive for us to continue to strive to do better at tactics. Please let me know if I've omitted anybody!

2. JavaManIssa 1538
3. Bahus 1484
4. Sancho Pawnza (aka Incognito) 1480
5. CelticDeath 1470
6. General Kaia (aka Prospero) 1461
7. Nezha 1443
8. Mousetrapper 1380

Come one, Knightwizzy, you can do better than that!
I belief that PS = Prospero and SP = Incognito.

I'm probably going to quit using CTS until they fix the clock so it isn't so punitive. When I solve a problem, I shouldn't lose points because I did it in under a minute or 30 seconds or whatever instead of 3 seconds. . .

General Kaia has laid claim to being Prospero, Tempo. I will add Sancho Pawnza to the list as Incognito.

Jim, I was thinking that last week, and I indeed took a few days off of it, because I got so pizzed off at getting my rating hammered because I took so long. However, when I came back at it fresh, I performed better. I also played a game on Yahoo! after one session and was able to use a game-saving tactic using one of the same ideas I came across on the server. So, I would say not to get discouraged, but take a little time off from it and hit it fresh.

Tempo, I was not trying to be fast on CTS(and indeed, I'm not very fast either), so I lose a lot of points even when I solve the problems.

In my opinion thats a drawback of CTS, it almost forces you to play the first move you can see, even if you're not 100% sure.

I'm not sure wether I'll still use CTS, but if I do, I'll probably keep going through the problems w/o worrying too much about ratings.

Jim, one other thing I would add is that there may be a pretty good reason for including the time element. If you are playing a game in a tournament, and you have the ability to instantly recognize a great number of tactical positions and respond with the correct answer within a few seconds, you would have much more time to spend on the strategic planning of your game. So, while it may seem harsh, there is a good reason for it.

Today I managed to push me up to 1400. It depends a great deal on luck. You either spot that mate or fork or pin on first sight, or you do not. Then you have to be quick with your mouse. Despite of my name, I am not :( - anyway, the rating tells much about the blitz strength of a player and less about his strength in slow games. I think it would be better to quit CTS until they have longer time delays, but unfortunately I am addicted ...

I've noticed that the server gives you problems you have seen before at times. Some of these I've been able to nail within the 3 sec time spot after having missed them the first time (or having simply taken too long to solve it before). It's not as forgiving as the Convekta software, but as the patterns are reinforced in your mind, you will be able to answer more correctly.

I managed to raise up to 1490 (oh, JavaManIssa, I'm getting closer :) ). One thing I'm finding that works for me is to immediately take in the piece positions as they load up on the screen. I try and determine the theme of the tactic and see if I can anticipate the first move. Then, I try to find the correct move.

Hey that's a cool site! Who found it first? DG? Anyways, I'll try and sign up the next opportunity.

Because of the time element the site is probably more useful for determining current strength. Although you can just ignore the score and use the site for the puzzles.

I respectfully disagree, Pawn Sensei. I have seen some improvement in my rating since I began using it. Improvement is hard to come by, especially with a low RD, but it does come about.
